Chapter 1
Snape walked into Hogwarts for the start-of-term feast. Students were flooding in, just like every year. Snape then glanced at the first-years. He hoped many of them would be members of his own house, Slytherin. Then Snape's eyes drifted to one student inparticular: the student was almost a duplicate of his old school rival James Potter, but his eyes were just like Lily Evans'. Lily was the girl Snape was in love with, but she had married James and had been killed by Voldemort. On the student's forehead there was a scar shaped like a bolt of lightning.
Oh! Snape thought. This must be Harry Potter, Lily and James' son. Snape stared into those brilliantly green eyes, remembering Lily. Then Harry looked at Snape, and he muttered something to his friend. It sure will be hard to always protect him, Snape thought, he looks so much like James. But he does have Lily's eyes...
Soon it was time for the Sorting. The hat sang its song, and then Professor McGonagall started calling out names. Snape observed each one, hoping they would be Slytherins. Soon Professor McGonagall called Harry's name, and Harry stepped up. It took the Sorting Hat a long time to decide on Harry's house, but it decided on Gryffindor.
Snape had mixed emotions about this. He wanted many Slytherins, and Harry had Lily's eyes, but he looked just like James, who Snape never could forgive. Snape thought the Sorting Hat was probably right in putting Harry in Gryffindor. But Snape just wondered what would happen when he started teaching Harry.
